From outside and inside the country, last year, about 666 million euros obtained from illegal activities circulated in Albania.
A report by the Global Initiative against Organized Crime shows that this amount is as much as 3 percent of the Gross Domestic Product. Most of this money, nearly 480 million euros, came from countries like Great Britain or Dubai, while 186.5 million was generated by criminal activity in the country.
" When we talk about illegal financial flows, we mean all that part of the economy that is not registered, or that is not declared. This includes money from the criminal economy, we talk about drugs, prostitution, illegal gambling, etc. On the other hand, we also have internal flows of money that are produced within the country, mainly as a result of corruption" , said Klodian Muço, expert on the Economy.
According to the report, due to illegal financial flows, Albania loses an average of 904 million dollars in global trade every year. This figure is about 6 percent of the country's annual Gross Domestic Product.
"This has brought deformation of the social and economic life of the country. There are some who say that the end of dirty money gives the economy a breather, but this is not true. Dirty money is cancer for the economy and destruction for the citizens ", said Muço.
Illegal money flows are estimated by experts as the main reason for deformations in the exchange rate.
"Last year, the euro depreciated by more than 15 percent. This would only be justified by excessive expansion of exports. This did not happen, so we find the explanation in dirty money" , says the expert.
The data from the Bank of Albania show that at the end of last year, the amount of money circulating outside the banks in the country reached 393.6 billion ALL or about 3.8 billion euros.
According to experts, such a large amount of money outside the banks is precisely related to illegal financial flows that enter from abroad or are produced within the country./ A2CNN
