From the war in the Middle East to the pockets of Albanian citizens… the effect of oil is being felt more and more every day. High prices have caused many drivers to limit their movements, while fuel imports have decreased for the first time in a long time.
After many months, oil imports and customs clearance have declined, at a time when tensions in the geopolitical situation and fluctuations in international stock markets have kept hydrocarbon prices high.
According to data from the General Directorate of Customs, 52 thousand tons of fuel were cleared during April, out of 60.7 thousand tons that were imported in the same month last year. This translates into about 8.7 thousand tons less consumption compared to April 2025, reports " TCH ".
Not only in April, where fuel prices in Albania peaked at 224 lek per liter, putting into effect the reduction in excise tax, but throughout the entire 4-month period, lower imports were observed. 207.7 thousand tons of fuel in January-April, nearly 11.7 thousand tons less than a year ago.
Focusing on excise products, while oil consumption is falling, another indicator is moving in the opposite direction.
As Albanians are using their cars less, it seems they are coping with stress differently... Maybe from the price of oil, or from bills, but apparently the cigarette is not leaving their hands.
In April, 264 tons of cigarettes were imported, or 31 tons more than in the same month last year. Imports of beer and coffee also increased.
