A surprising political phenomenon has taken hold in Albanian politics in recent months. The wave of investigations and proceedings by the new justice system at the government's expense has been overshadowed by a massive opposition campaign to destabilize the majority. A majority that is in its darkest days since it has been in power since 2013.
There is nothing wrong with the opposition's intention to take advantage of Spak's attacks on socialist ministers and MPs. Any opposition would have acted the same way in these circumstances, which have raised serious questions about the continuation of the SP's fourth mandate.
There is only one "asterisk" in this statement. A specificity that makes this behavior a bit suspicious and hypocritical. Tonight, two of the three leaders of the traditional opposition were in the square (another young oppositionist stood at the edge of the protest with a few dozen supporters). Sali Berisha and Fatmir Mediu were there physically, while Ilir Meta was absent, being held in pre-trial detention.
All three, Berisha, Mediu, and Meta, are subjects of investigation and trial by the new justice system. Berisha and Meta on corruption charges, Mediu on trial for the Gërdec incident. That too is a story of corruption stained with blood.
The three political leaders of these parties, along with a couple dozen MPs and senior officials of the three political forces, have been dealing for months with the accusations against Veliaj, Balluk, Rama himself and other senior socialist officials, including figures close to them who have currently fallen into the net of the Spak investigation. Meanwhile, they are themselves the subject of investigation and trial by the same justice system.
We are therefore faced with a situation where those accused by Spak at the head of the protest are demanding the removal of political opponents also accused by the prosecution and the special court that are located in the offices. In other words, the "Spakists" of the street are demanding the resignation of the "Spakists" of the state.
It is an understatement to say that this ambiguity lies at the foundation of the cold climate that surrounded the protest itself, with a few thousand militants brought in by car from all over the place. A city with a million inhabitants like Tirana is not “enough” to fill a square, but people from Tropoja and Erseka must be brought in vans to the door of the Prime Minister’s Office!
The credibility of those who challenge determines the mass of people who follow. Otherwise, the challenge is diluted with water and turns into a parade. For weeks, Berisha has been organizing his 200-person rostrum on the boulevard. In the midst of the socialist criminal drama, the Doctor regularly displays his powerlessness in the square, confirming that he will not be able to take advantage of any favorable circumstances that fate brings to his door.
What our eyes are seeing is unequivocally confirming that today, six months after the parliamentary elections, a paradoxical situation has been installed in Albania where a political party has as an opponent not another political party, but a justice institution! For the DP and Berisha, Edi Rama wins three more elections. Today's protest square says it. The insistence of the Democrats to maintain an aged, worn-out and accused leadership also says it. The street Spakists are just as in trouble and under pressure as the government Spakists. Only the former act as if nothing happened and this determines their gradual downfall and defactoring. The party that follows the troubles of the boss, not the party that follows the troubles of the voter. We saw this once again tonight in the square!
