Two Albanians escaped from the prison in Kassavetia, Greece on Thursday evening.
The two prisoners, both aged 41, have been sentenced to 20 years in prison for serious crimes, including murder, robbery and arson.
However, since 2019 they have been staying in an unfenced area of the prison, due to good behavior.
Their room was checked only a few times a day by the staff. The fugitives had been given five days off in 2024. They took advantage of their return from the last leave a few days earlier to plan and execute their escape.
Their escape was discovered at 21:00 on Thursday and the Greek police immediately mobilized for their capture as the two fugitives are considered dangerous, due to serious criminal precedents, while the investigations to find the Albanians continue.
