Unauthorized construction in Saranda/ Court leaves the chief of the police
Gezim Bashllari

The Saranda Court remanded in prison the head of the Police Station, Gëzim Bashllari, and inspector Robert Cullaj, while the other two leaders were placed under "house arrest".

The Saranda Court has imposed security measures for four leaders of the Saranda Police Station, after a marathon session that lasted about seven hours.

At the conclusion of the judicial review, Judge Shkëlzen Liçaj imposed the measure of "prison arrest" for 30 days on Gëzim Bashllari and Robert Cullaj, while Ajdin Islamaj and Andi Duro were placed under "house arrest".

The prosecution, represented by prosecutors Silvana Belishta and Esmeranda Basho, had requested "arrest in prison" for 45 days for Bashllari and Cullaj, arguing that during this period additional evidence on the charges against them will be presented. For the other two leaders, "house arrest" was requested.

During the hearing, defense lawyers opposed the prosecution's requests, calling the arrests illegal and unsupported by sufficient evidence. They demanded the immediate release of the four police leaders.

Even the leaders of the Saranda Police Station denied the accusations before the trial panel, stating that they had performed their duties in accordance with the law.

The four officers are being investigated on suspicion of favoring and allowing unauthorized construction in the coastal city of Saranda.

We recall that the arrest was carried out as part of an operation that AMP launched on May 15 in the south of the country, following information that local police officials are involved in allowing unauthorized construction.

They are accused of: “Abuse of office”, provided for by Article 248 of the Criminal Code; “Committing arbitrary actions”, provided for by Article 250 of the Criminal Code; “Failure to take measures to terminate the illegal situation”, provided for by Article 251 of the Criminal Code; committed in collaboration.

The head of the Saranda Police Station, Gëzim Bashllari, and three police inspectors, Andi Duro, Ajdin Ismailaj, and Robert Çullaj, were arrested. Specifically, they are accused of abusing their power by tolerating and favoring unauthorized construction in the most sought-after coastal areas of the south, mainly in Saranda and Ksamil.

The operation began after a complaint about an unauthorized construction on a beach area in neighborhood no. 1 of Saranda. This case led to the arrest of eight workers and the search for the owner Arjola Dhrami Bajo. After the alert, IKMT, IMT and the Municipal Police intervened to demolish the building.

The Director General of the State Police, Skënder Hita, himself referred the case to the Police Supervision Agency. In cooperation with the Saranda Prosecutor's Office, the AMP then continued the investigations to hold the police officers who had failed to act to stop the illegal constructions accountable.

Also, the head of the Section for the Investigation of Major Crimes at the Saranda Police Station, Commissioner Blerim Tafçiu, was suspended after he failed to appear for questioning by the AMP during the investigations.
