In the days leading up to her tragic death on August 5, 1962, Marilyn Monroe was emotionally troubled and filled with anger toward the Kennedy brothers, whom she accused of using and then abandoning her. Her closest friends and associates had noticed that she was increasingly isolated and dependent on sleeping pills.
At a weekend getaway hosted by Frank Sinatra at Lake Tahoe, Monroe appeared drunk and emotionally disturbed. She tried to relax, but her condition worsened, and upon returning to Los Angeles, she made several attempts to contact Bobby Kennedy, intending to confront him with the truths she claimed would "shock the world."
Tensions between her and Bobby Kennedy are recorded in a wiretapped conversation at her home, where it is said that there was a heated argument over a red notebook in which Monroe had written details of sensitive "political matters."
On her last night, Monroe was alone in her home. She was under the influence of medication and the frequent phone calls had left her agitated. According to reports, she had taken a large quantity of Nembutal pills and was in contact with several people by phone until late hours.
At around 3 a.m., after a bad feeling, her maid Eunice Murray tried to enter the room, but the door was locked. When finally, with the help of psychiatrist Dr. Greenson, the window was broken to gain entry, Monroe was found lying on the bed, naked, with her phone in her hand and no signs of life. All the medicine bottles had been opened and one, containing 50 capsules, was empty.
Her doctors, Greenson and Engelberg, arrived at the scene and pronounced her dead. At around 4:15 a.m., police were notified of a suspected suicide. But the first officer to arrive noticed unusual behavior and a delay in opening the door.
Although officially ruled a suicide, the circumstances surrounding her death remain controversial and are the subject of speculation to this day. The death of the Hollywood icon, who had entered into relationships with powerful political and mafia figures, is still one of the great mysteries of modern America.
