FIFA President Gianni Infantino has defended the use of hydration breaks during matches, arguing that they not only serve the physical well-being of footballers, but also as a valuable opportunity for coaches to intervene tactically.
Referring to the England match, Infantino stated:
" After an intense start to both halves of the game, England made good use of the hydration breaks to regroup, reorganise and take the lead, before scoring twice in the final 15 minutes. These breaks are crucial in giving players a chance to catch their breath during tournament matches, while also giving coaches a dedicated moment in each match, regardless of the weather conditions, to communicate directly with their players. Overall, this was another fantastic FIFA World Cup match between two great teams, in a fantastic arena in Atlanta ."
However, the FIFA president's statement has sparked criticism on social media and among football commentators. According to critics, Infantino's arguments are intended to justify the regular use of hydration breaks in the future.
They claim that these interruptions do not serve the players or the pace of the game, but create additional space for television broadcasters and FIFA to generate more advertising revenue. For this reason, a section of fans continues to oppose their implementation, arguing that such interruptions disrupt the natural flow of the match.
