The Minister for Local Government, Ervin Demo, presented a new platform that envisages the gradual transfer of aerial cable networks to underground infrastructure, with the aim of increasing safety and improving the urban appearance of cities.
During an event organized for this initiative, Demo described the project as an important step towards a new phase of development for local government, closely linking it to Albania's preparations for membership in the European Union.
According to him, the initiative is part of the vision of "Rilindja 2.0", a strategy that is expected to be presented soon to the mayors and the public. The Minister emphasized that the development of cities should be based on integrated and long-term plans, avoiding fragmented interventions.
Demo also focused on the importance of increasing the capacities of municipalities to design quality projects, so that they can benefit more from European Union funds. According to him, these funds represent an important opportunity for improving infrastructure and aligning local standards with European ones.
"This platform opens an important process for municipalities and the possibilities of the future. Municipalities must enter another phase of development also in function of preparing for EU integration. This goal is also carried by Rilindja 2.0, on which we have started working in a very detailed manner and will soon make it present with all mayors, to the public opinion. The development of municipalities can no longer be seen as isolated interventions, but as an integrated process.
Today we are gathered for two important issues, the first is related to the modernization of infrastructure and the second is related to the fact that municipalities must prepare better quality projects and that they must better absorb EU funds, as part of the integration process and preparation of Albania according to EU standards. In many cities we see cables installed without standards, improvised poles and installations that damage the appearance of the cities, but are also unsafe. Our goal is to install them according to standards.
We want municipalities to be the main players in this transformation. Underground infrastructure should not be seen as a cost, but as an asset for cities. In the end, the main beneficiaries are the citizens, who will have safer and cleaner cities. This is an opportunity that should be used well. European funds are a very good opportunity for local governments. We will focus on these opportunities”, said Demo.
