Former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, in a meeting with the heads of the branches, stated that the battle started in the parliament like never before in these 32 years, has to do with the sovereignty of the Albanians.
Berisha said that internal sovereignty is the power of citizens to control their government. Furthermore, the former prime minister said that the opposition will not leave the parliament without receiving the rights they are entitled to.
"I express my satisfaction that we are meeting tonight on the eve of the National Assembly of the DP, which has and will have fundamental issues, the action, or the Opposition in Action, the DP in Action! In its existence, during the 32 years, Albanian democracy, the rights of Albanians, have never been as they are today, kicked by a person who has established his complete personal power in Albania. Who controls all the powers today, controls them in the strictest way. After the May elections, he went to a new attempt to annihilate the de facto opposition in parliament. By denying opposition MPs the most basic rights of those they represent. None of the constitutional articles related to the MP in Parliament are about the person. They are all the articles that guarantee the parliament for its function as the central temple of democracy.
You are witnessing that for more than a month, a battle has been taking place in the parliament, which the parliament has never known. A life-or-death battle unfolds for parliamentary pluralism. So, a battle that, like never before in 32 years, has to do with the sovereignty of the Albanian people. You should know, in political doctrine, sovereignty has two sides. There is an internal side and an external side, relations with the outside. Sovereignty in foreign relations is the power of a country to make independent decisions in its own interest, uninfluenced, and to protect its interest.
But domestic sovereignty is one and only one, the power of citizens to control their own government. It is the power that the Constitution of the country gives to citizens to control their own government. This control, according to the Constitution, is exercised primarily through parliamentary committees. So, what seems to be a perhaps not so important issue, it is actually a more fundamental issue of a country's internal sovereignty.
