Serbian lawyer pays homage in Prekaz: Belgrade violates and arrests every person
Serbian lawyer, Cedomir Stojkovic in Prekaz

The Serbian lawyer, Cedomir Stojkovic, has placed flowers on the grave of Blerina Jashari in the "Adem Jashari" memorial complex in Prekaz.

He said that no one "will prevent us from walking the path of reconciliation, peace, solidarity and justice".

Blerina was 7 years old when she was killed by Serbian forces in 1998.

Stojkovic, a citizen of Serbia, is the lawyer of the opposition politician in Serbia, Nikola Sandullovic, who was arrested on January 3, 2024, shortly after he published photos from the memorial complex in Prekaz.

He was arrested on suspicion of "having committed the criminal offense of inciting national, racial and religious hatred and intolerance". Meanwhile, he was released, but his passport was confiscated.

Lawyer Stojkovic said that Sandullovic had paid homage on February 17, 2023.

"Twenty-five years after the Kosovo war, like the last Balkan war, my country arrests and beats people who want reconciliation between nations by placing flowers on the graves of Albanian children. It is something we should not ignore. It is a clear warning that evil has not been defeated, that it bides its time….

I came here not only to express my pain for the murdered citizens, after 26 years, I came here not only to honor the victims, but I also came here to give a clear message that we are building a better future for our life. People, don't be afraid. We were not afraid yesterday, we are not afraid today and we will not be afraid tomorrow. "No one will prevent us from walking the path of reconciliation, peace, solidarity and justice," he said.

Stojkovic announced in advance about his visit to Prekaz and said that with this he challenges the authorities in Serbia to arrest him as well as Sandullovic.

"Arrested or not, I will continue to be a free man, because freedom does not come from judgments... Freedom comes from the human heart," Stojkovic said.

He said that the message that should be sent by Prekazi is that "freedom will always win".

"Blerina, hate dies, you live forever. Let thousands of tears create thousands of years of peace and millions of hopes and dreams that begin with the word - I'm sorry", said the Serbian lawyer.

Along with Blerina, more than 50 other members of the Jashari family were killed by Serbian forces, among them former commander Adem Jashari - one of the founders of the former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA).

The Serbian lawyer announced that he will return to Belgrade tomorrow, and when asked by reporters if he feels afraid that he might be arrested, he denied any such thing.

On January 2, Sandullovic published a video on the social network X, where he was seen at the "Adem Jashari" compound in Prekaz, laying a wreath at the monument commemorating the events of March 5, 6, and 7, 1998, when Serbian forces killed more than 50 members of the family of Adem Jashari, one of the founders of the former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA).

A day after the video was published on the X network, lawyer Cedomir Stojkovic announced that Sandullovic was arrested on January 3.

Sandullovic was held in custody from January 5 to 15, and his arrest sparked reactions in Kosovo and beyond.

The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, said that he was mistreated after apologizing for Serbia's crimes. Meanwhile, the institutions of the European Union confirmed on January 9 that they are monitoring the situation and the information related to the arrest of Sandullovic.

Family members said that Sandullovic was brutally mistreated. The prosecution in Serbia said that there is no evidence for this.

The former head of the Security and Information Agency of Serbia (BIA), Aleksandar Vulin, said on January 6 that Sandullovic was arrested on his orders, because he had placed a wreath of flowers in the village of Prekaz in Skenderaj.

Sandullovic is the president of the Republican Party that was founded in 2015, but has not passed the electoral threshold to enter the Serbian Parliament.

He has a controversial biography, including his injuries from a car explosion 13 years ago, and his arrest for "spreading panic" in 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic.
