Renowned international lawyer Amal Clooney – the wife of actor George Clooney – risks being barred from entering the United States, following her involvement in advising the International Criminal Court (ICC) on the prosecution of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes in Gaza.
According to the Financial Times, the British government has warned several high-profile lawyers about the possibility of sanctions from the Donald Trump administration, as a result of their involvement in the case that led to international arrest warrants against Israeli officials in November 2024. Trump, through an executive order signed in February, has imposed financial sanctions and visa restrictions on ICC employees and their families, calling the process "baseless."
Although so far only ICC prosecutor Karim Khan is directly mentioned on the sanctions list, the inclusion of Amal Clooney – who has a renowned career in human rights and is one of the figures who has influenced this process – could put her in the target of the Trump administration's punitive orders.
This could have serious consequences for her personal and professional life, given that she has been living in the US with George Clooney and their 7-year-old twins since 2014. The case is sparking new debates about the clash between international justice and global political powers.
