"La Roja" more demanding. Missing goal in the first half of the World Cup final
The first half of the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina ended with a score of 0-0, after a 45-minute period where emotions were not lacking at the start, but clear scoring opportunities were few.
Spain created the first dangerous opportunity in the 5th minute. Lamin Jamal was beautifully served by Dani Olmo, but his shot was deflected by Lisandro Martinez and then controlled without problems by goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
Just a minute later, Argentina reacted. Lionel Messi quickly launched a counterattack, passing the Spanish defenders, but goalkeeper Unai Simon came out of his area in time and cleared the danger.
After these two episodes, the pace of the match dropped significantly, with both teams being cautious and not creating clear scoring chances.
Spain registered their first shot on target only in the 38th minute, when Mikel Ojarzabal tried from distance, but his attempt was off-centre and easily stopped by Emiliano Martinez.
Two minutes later, Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić issued the first yellow card of the final, punishing Lisandro Martinez for an illegal tackle on Ojarzabal.
In the 43rd minute, Argentina were forced to make their first substitution. Lisandro Martinez was unable to continue due to injury and was replaced by Nicolas Otamendi.
Thus, the first 45 minutes ended goalless, with everything remaining open for the second half of the World Cup final.
