Two French women, Natacha Rey and Amandine Roy, have been found guilty of defamation over an unfounded claim about France's First Lady, Brigitte Macron. According to BBC reports, in December 2021, Rey and Roy had published online that Brigitte Macron had never existed and that her brother, Jean-Michel Trogneux, had changed gender and started using her name. This claim went viral and sparked conspiracy theories, especially in far-right circles.

As a result of this claim, Macron filed a complaint and the pair were found guilty of defamation. The court has ordered Rey and Roy to pay compensation of 8,000 euros to Ms Macron and 5,000 euros to her brother. The legal action was taken after the video containing the claims was shared by accounts opposed to President Emmanuel Macron, including those on the far right and followers of the QAnon conspiracy movement.

Macron's lawyer, Jean Ennochi, described the decision as a normal application of the law and noted the extent of the prejudice caused by the allegations. This event is an example of the bullying and defamation that public figures face, especially when they are associated with individuals in high political positions.
