February 14 is known as Valentine's Day where, in addition to love, this day is also made special by the gifts that partners exchange with each other.
Flowers, various jewelry, chocolates, cards are some of the gifts that couples like to give to their loved ones on the occasion of February 14.
Valentine's Day or otherwise known as Saint Valentine is named after a famous saint, but there are many stories as to who he was. It is generally believed that Saint Valentine was a priest from Rome during the third century.
Emperor Claudius II at the time had banned marriage because he thought that married men were weak soldiers. But Valentine believed that rule was unfair and broke the rules by marrying the couples in secret.
When Claudius found out, he imprisoned Valentinus and sentenced him to life imprisonment. In prison, Valentine fell in love with the prison guard's daughter and when he was sent to be shot on February 14, he sent her a letter signed "from your Valentine"!
How was Valentine's Day born?
Valentine's Day is a very old tradition, and is believed to have originated from a Roman festival.
The Romans had a festival called Lupercalia in the middle of February – the beginning of spring. It is believed that as part of various celebrations, boys had drawn names of girls from a box. Then with the girl whose name they had drawn from the box, they behaved as a couple during the festival and sometimes even ended up getting married.
Later, the church decided to turn this festival into a Christian holiday and decided to use it to commemorate Saint Valentine.
