Martah Louise is the Norwegian princess who is getting married this weekend to a bisexual shaman. Her fiance is known for the faith practice, known as shamanism, that interacts with the spirit world through altered states of consciousness, such as trance.
The fourth princess in line to the Norwegian throne will marry a self-proclaimed shaman this weekend.
Princess Martha Louise, 52, met Durek Verrett, 49, after a mutual friend introduced them, announcing their engagement three years later.
Their wedding celebrations began on Thursday in the UNESCO-listed Geiranger Fjord, where members of other European royal families and celebrities will attend the official ceremony.
The princess and her future husband went through quite a bit of controversy in Norway.
Martha Louise is the daughter of King Harald and Queen Sonja.
Her father became king in 1991, a year after she was granted succession rights, making him fourth in line to the throne.
Despite being the king's eldest child, her younger brother, Crown Prince Haakon, will succeed him as monarch.
The princess married author and artist Ari Behn in 2002. The couple have three daughters: Maud Angelica, 21, Leah Isadora, 19, and Emma Tallulah, 15.
In 2017, they divorced. Her ex-husband took his own life on Christmas Day after years of mental health and alcohol problems.
The princess lost her royal title amid public concerns that she was using her constitutional role to help her start her own business.
She stepped down from royal duties completely in 2022, but has been allowed to retain her title of princess.
In a documentary she said that the views of the fiance bring dissatisfaction to the public.
"The Norwegian people I think... have decided that it is better for me to step down because of Verrett's views on things," she said.
She ran her own "angel school" between 2007 and 2018, which was described as an alternative therapy center that helped clients communicate with angels and the dead.
She now has another alternative therapy business with her fiance.
Shaman's views are 'very strange'.
A shaman is considered to have access to and influence over the world of good and evil spirits, especially among some peoples of northern Asia and North America.
Typically, such people enter a state of trance during a ritual and practice divination and healing.
Durek Verrett is originally from San Francisco and says he comes from generations of shamans connected to the Lucumi tribe in Haiti.
According to reports, between 2007 and 2015 he was in a relationship with a man named Hank Greenberg. He now identifies as bisexual.
