Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria-Hungary, the tragedy of Sisi's forgotten son

The love story of the enchanting Empress Sisi (1837-1898) is a story that still touches deeply, thanks in part to film adaptations starring the actress of the century, Romy Schneider.

But behind the royal romance lies a tragedy almost forgotten in history. The drama about Sisi's only son: Rudolf, Crown Prince of Austria and Hungary (1858-1889).

His tragic death, which was covered up by the Habsburg monarchy.

Dutch author Anthony Kröner has attempted to address the story in a new book (“Kroonprins Rudolf van Oostenrijk-Hongarije”). BILD also sought out data.

Rudolf was a free spirit, extremely liberal for his time and his ultra-conservative father, Emperor Franz Joseph I.

Rudolf studied in Prague, and served his military service in Infantry Regiment Number 36.

In 1881, he married the beautiful Princess Stephanie of Belgium (1864-1945), daughter of the Belgian King Leopold II (1835-1909) - allegedly under pressure from his father.

The couple traveled extensively. Bulgaria, Romania, Belgrade, were the places where they spent their holidays. In 1883, their daughter, Archduchess Elisabeth Marie (1883-1963), was born.

The drama began in February 1886! Crown Prince Rudolf was infected with gonorrhea - an infectious bacterial disease, which is transmitted through unprotected sex, affecting the urinary and sexual organs.

Treatment at that time was difficult. There were no antibiotics yet. He had to recover in Dalmatia on the mild Adriatic - and there he infected his wife. She became sterile. A tragedy for the monarchy!

On January 30, 1889, the heir to the throne, then 30 years old, went on his last journey at night. He shot himself in the head at the Mayerling hunting lodge (Lower Austria). Before that, he shot one of his girlfriends. Baroness Marie von Vetsera was only 17 years old. According to tradition, the crown prince did this out of deep shame.
