Famous American singer R. Kelly has been rushed to the hospital after a suspected drug overdose inside the prison where he is serving a 30-year sentence for sexual exploitation and extortion.
According to a legal document provided by his lawyers, Robert Sylvester Kelly, 57, was placed in solitary confinement on June 10, where he was given anti-anxiety medication by prison staff. That same day, he was also given additional medication, which he was asked to take.
Just three days later, Kelly reported dizziness, weakness, and difficulty seeing, saying he was seeing “black spots.” The situation worsened with loss of consciousness, leading to immediate transfer to Duke University Hospital.
A statement made by Kelly himself to prison staff, stating: "This will open a new Pandora's box," has raised serious questions about the management of medication and his treatment by prison authorities.
The incident is under investigation, with the artist's lawyers expressing concern for their client's health and treatment. The incident comes as R. Kelly faces the consequences of his historic conviction following a wave of #MeToo allegations that revealed serious and ongoing abuse of minors and women.
