It took Susan six years to realize that everything she knew about her family history was wrong. She discovered that in the 1950s she had been switched with another baby in the maternity ward. The BBC says this is the second case of its kind to be discovered by the prestigious British news outlet.

Susan recounted that by chance, after entering her details, she received a message out of nowhere from a stranger who wanted to say only one thing: The two of them had to be genetically sibling.
Her first reaction was that she might have been secretly adopted. Both of her parents had died a few years ago, so she asked her brother. He thought everything that was happening now was a hoax.
Although Susan remained suspicious because she was taller than her brother and had blonde hair, unlike the rest of the family, her eldest daughter did some research, leading to the hypothesis that she may have been mistaken for a mother.
At that time, treatment in maternity hospitals was different. Babies were separated and placed in large rooms where they were cared for by nurses.
Susan says she has met her biological family, but because of the years that have passed, the emotional connection is not strong. The BBC writes that she is among the first people to receive compensation in such a case.
