A strange testimony highlights parts of the new documentary "Coronation Girls" directed by Douglas Arrowsmith, which tells the story of 50 women who, at the age of 17, traveled from Canada to Britain to see the coronation of Queen Elizabeth.
In it, King Charles shares a childhood memory of his mother bathing AND wearing her crown in preparation for her coronation in 1953. At the time, Charles was only four years old, but he claims to have vivid memories of that time.
In fact, he himself admitted that he was "a little nervous" about his coronation, that the jewel-laden crown would "wobble" on his head.
"My sister and I took a bath in the evening. My mother used to come to us with her crown to wash us. You have to get used to its weight, "recalls the British king, explaining that the historic coronation crown weighs almost 2.3 kilograms.
The girls' historic trip to Britain, in 1953, was financed by a Canadian businessman, Garfield Weston, and was by sea. Their stay in Britain lasted seven weeks.
None of the participating girls had left their hometown until then. Some didn't even have a television at home, so that trip to London, which was even decorated for the coronation, was an extremely special and impressive experience.
After returning to Canada, they followed different paths, some became teachers, one a climate activist and one a nun, but they kept in touch with each other. The survivors in 2023 returned to London at Buckingham Palace aged about 89.
