Award-winning Canadian actress Catherine O'Hara died on January 30 in Los Angeles at the age of 71 from a pulmonary embolism, according to her death certificate. The official document indicates that the long-term cause of death was rectal cancer, for which O'Hara had been receiving treatment since March 2025.

O'Hara was widely known for her comedic and dramatic roles. She most recently appeared in the Emmy-winning series The Studio and the hit TV series The Last of Us. Actors and co-stars have paid tribute to her with emotional words and great respect. Seth Rogen described O'Hara as "hysterical, kind, intuitive and generous," while Pedro Pascal wrote that "there's less light in my world" without her.

O'Hara also starred in six seasons of Schitt's Creek, for which she won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. The show's co-creator, Eugene Levy, said he had the "honor to work with her for over fifty years," while Dan Levy called her "family before she played my family." Macaulay Culkin, who starred with O'Hara in the classic film Home Alone, posted an emotional tribute on Instagram, writing, "I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I love you. I'll see you later."

O'Hara is survived by her husband Bo Welch, sons Matthew and Luke, and six siblings. According to experts, pulmonary embolism is a life-threatening condition that occurs when a clot blocks a blood vessel in the lungs, causing difficulty breathing, chest pain and coughing up blood.
