Boavista in liquidation process, the Portuguese giant with the shirt like a

In 1903, British and Portuguese workers founded a very special club in Porto, Boavista, known for its iconic black and white checkered shirt.

After 122 years of history and being one of the 5 teams that have been able to win the title in Portugal, Boavista or as it is otherwise called 'Pantera' is going through the most delicate moment in its history. Last season the club closed the Primera Division championship in last place and due to major financial problems and legal proceedings for possible involvement in corruption, this club has been denied registration in the second, third and fourth divisions of Lusitanian football. An institutional free fall that brought the most frightening scenario.

Now, the club's administrator has formally requested the liquidation of Boavista, citing the club's inability to solve its economic problems. However, the club insists that this process does not mean the final disappearance of Boavista, as the club has received the green light for an economic rescue plan that can keep this institution alive.

The decisive date will be December 16, when creditors will decide whether this project is valid or not. If the plan is rejected, then Boavista will cease to exist after more than a century.

The dramatic situation of the last Portuguese league champion team before the dominance of Benfica, Porto and Sporting Lisbon (Boavista won the title in 2001) and one of the only 5 Lusitanian teams to have played in the Champions League, brings to mind other similar recent cases in European football such as that of Bordeaux in France or the Brescia club in Italy, to show that even historical football giants cannot survive if finances collapse.
