New and disturbing details have emerged in the trial of Diego Armando Maradona's death. One witness has said that just days before the Argentine legend's death, shouting and arguments could be heard in his home.
Luciano Spena, the nutritionist for the Argentina national team, testified before the court about a visit that took place on November 18, 2020, seven days before Maradona's death. He explained that he had gone to the apartment where the former world champion was staying, together with doctor Pedro Di Spagna, with the aim of checking on the 60-year-old's health.
However, the check was never carried out.
According to Spena, immediately after the arrival of neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luke, Maradona's personal physician and one of the defendants in the trial, he and his colleague heard loud voices from the room where the former footballer was.
" We heard arguments or shouting ," Spena stated during his testimony.
He added that a few moments later Luke was told that it was "not a good day" to have the medical examination, so the examination was canceled.
Maradona passed away on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60. According to the forensic examination, the cause of death was acute pulmonary edema, associated with severe cardiac problems.
Eight members of the medical staff who cared for him, including neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luke and psychiatrist Agustina Kosashov, are facing charges of "possible simple murder", with the prosecution alleging that negligence and lack of due care may have contributed to the football icon's death.
All defendants have denied any responsibility, while the trial continues to reveal new episodes from the last days of the life of one of the greatest footballers of all time.
