The Belgian Football Federation has announced that defender Zeno Debast will not be available for today's match, after his club, Sporting Lisbon, requested that the player not be activated for medical reasons.
According to the Federation, the Portuguese club has submitted a medical report stating that the player is unfit to play. However, this assessment contradicts the conclusions of the Belgian national team's medical staff, as well as the assessments of FIFA's medical and insurance bodies.
" Zeno Debast will not be available for the quarter-final. His club, Sporting, has informed the player that he is medically unfit to play. This assessment differs from that of our medical team, as well as that of the medical and insurance bodies of FIFA ," the Belgian Federation said in a statement.
Debast suffered a groin injury while playing for Sporting and joined the national team while still recovering. He has not played a single minute at this World Cup.
Despite the opposing positions between the club and the national team, the issue still remains open. Another meeting between the parties is expected before the start of the match to clarify the situation and decide whether the decision of Sporting's medical staff will be respected or another solution will be found.
