Israel may have Russia's luck in soccer. It is this most recent thesis, which is expected to be considered in the FIFA Council at the next meeting. The Palestinian Football Federation appears to have submitted a second request to the highest football institution, for the exclusion of Israel from any competition.
Earlier in March, the Palestine Football Association called for a vote at the FIFA congress in May to suspend Israel over the war in Gaza. It all stems from the October 7 Hamas attack in southern Israel, where 1,200 people lost their lives, with 251 people taken hostage. The decision, according to Xhani Infantino, belongs to the FIFA Council, which is also the main decision-making body of the organization that runs the world of football.
For Thursday's meeting - reports "BBC Sport" - on the agenda is a "proposal presented by the Palestine Football Association to the 74th FIFA Congress". The Palestinians believe the Israeli federation has committed "violations of FIFA regulations" and are calling for sanctions against the country's "national teams and clubs". The response from Shino Moshe Zuares, president of the IFF (Israel Football Associated) was not long in coming: "We have faced a cynical political and hostile attempt by the Palestinian association to damage Israeli football."
Meanwhile, the Israeli national team is playing its Nations League matches in Hungary on a neutral ground, while an away match against Belgium last month was moved due to security concerns. However, there is a plan to host France and play in Italy for the upcoming matches in October. A decision by the FIFA council is needed more than ever in these moments.
