The Swiss women's national football team suffered a heavy 7-1 defeat in a friendly match against the Lucerne under-14 boys' team, in a match that was closed to the public.
Although such matches are part of regular preparations for major competitions like the upcoming European Championship, the result has caused heated reactions.
At the training camp where Pia Sundhage was selected in preparation for the match against the Czech Republic next Thursday, a match was played against the youth team of Lucerne. The only goal for Switzerland was scored by Alaia Pilgrim.
The Swiss Football Association did not release details of the result and the public learned about it from those present. According to media reports, one of the most famous female footballers in the world was also on the pitch, Alicia Lehman.
After heated reactions, the spokesperson for the Swiss women's national team, Sven Mikose, explaining that such matches are common practice to test the readiness of the national team, said:
" In women's football, it is quite normal to play against men's youth teams to test physical condition and competitive pace. Regardless of the result, these matches are similar in intensity and physical exertion to international matches ," the association said.
During the match against Luzern, coach Sundhage activated up to 26 players, and in the second half she changed the entire team.
Previously, the Swiss women played two more such test matches, against the youth teams of FC Solothurn and FC Biel. They lost to Solothurn 2:1, while they won against Biel with the same result.
