Norway coach Stale Solbaken has defended his decision to bench some of his star players, including Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard, for their match against France. Despite the team's humiliating 4-1 defeat to the Roosters, the Norwegian believes his decision was the right one for the team's long-term goals.
The defeat left Norway in second place in the group, a position that, according to the calculations, offers them a more favorable path to the knockout stage. However, the Nordics could face Brazil in the round of 32 of the competition.
Asked about this possibility, Solbaken calmly said:
" A possible match with Brazil? They have never beaten us in history. However, this is not the time to think about that. We have a very difficult match ahead of us against Ivory Coast, one of the strongest teams physically. I believe Brazil will qualify, but then we will see what happens ," he declared.
The Norwegian coach also responded to criticism for leaving the team's two most popular players on the bench, emphasizing that his priority is sporting success and not spectacle.
" I understand that there are people who have paid a lot of money to see Odegaard and Haaland. But we want to stay in this tournament as long as possible. I am here to make the best decisions that help us move forward, not just to have fun. Now we have to change hotels and we have one less day off, so that also influenced my decision ," Solbaken concluded.
