How Donald Trump fell into the trap of the Balkan "sheikhs"
Cartoon Pamphlet /

From Serbia to Albania, the Trump family's projects are following the same trajectory: deals with governments accused of concentrating power, controversies over public assets, and a growing cost to the American president's international image. What started as economic diplomacy is turning into a political burden.

The Balkans are not the Middle East. Billions here are not enough to buy political peace. Every major investment ends in a battle for power, property, and the public interest.

Even Donald Trump is learning this.

From Belgrade to Sazan, the Trump family name has been involved in projects that are no longer discussed for their economic value, but for the way they were made possible.

In Serbia, Jared Kushner's project at the former General Staff faced controversy over procedures and the use of a national symbol.

In Albania, the investment in the Sazan project has become the subject of protests, environmental debates, and accusations of lack of transparency.

It's no coincidence. The pattern is almost identical.

Governments offer "strategic" status, simplify procedures, and present the investor as the savior of the economy. In return, the investment gains unconditional political support. The problem is that when the project is identified with the government, it also inherits all the opposition to it.

This is the trap that Trump seems to have fallen into. Not because the investments are necessarily wrong, but because they are increasingly associated with leaders who are criticized for power concentration, clientelism, and lack of transparency.

In diplomacy and business, reputation is worth as much as capital.

When international media talk more about protests, conflicts, and controversies than about the project, the problem is no longer just local. It becomes political and international.

The paradox is obvious. Trump promised to fight the establishment. In the Balkans, he risks identifying with precisely the most contested establishment.

Resorts can be built. Luxury marinas can be filled with yachts. But reputation is not built with special laws and political favors. It is built with trust. And trust is the hardest asset to regain. /Pamphlet
