To say that Mateus Nunez has had a rapid rise in the world of football would be an understatement.
After a short spell with Ullverhampton, Nunjes has moved to Manchester City for £53m (around €61m), in a move that will strengthen Pep Guardiola's side as they look to defend their title for a third time.
It's easy to argue that the 25-year-old's career surely couldn't have gone any better for a number of reasons.
First, he joins a club that has quality in every department.
Secondly, Nunjes is now part of a team that dominated football on all fronts last season after winning the famous Triplet which included the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup.
Did Nunjes ever think he would be at Manchester City? If you asked him this question four years ago, his answer would likely have been “NO”.
As "Sunsport" wrote, four years ago, the midfielder was giving smiles to residents near Lisbon through a bakery where he worked.
Earlier, Nunjes lived in Brazil in his childhood but had to move to Portugal with his mother and stepfather when he was 13 years old.
In particular, he grew up in Favela Campo Grande, where he greatly admired Brazilian legend Ronaldinho.
Since his biological father was not part of his life, he had to be raised by his mother Katia, who did her best to give him a decent living.
He told Portuguese newspaper Record:
" Sometimes we had nothing to eat... even though my mother never stopped working. She is a fighter who instilled in me the love of football. I got my first touches with him. If we didn't have the ball, my brother and I would play with socks ."
Regarding the bakery, Nunjes revealed that he worked there for several months as it was a family business.
" I used to go in the morning and the matches were in the afternoon. I stood for five, sometimes six hours, and training afterwards was not easy ."
Nunjes worked in a bakery while mastering his art of football at the same time, and eventually joined Ericeirenses, a club in Portugal's lower leagues.
He quickly caught the eye of scouts and was eventually picked up by Estoril, who placed him with the U-23 team. In 2019, he was transferred to Sporting and then to Ullverhampton. Now he will be part of the best midfield in Europe and England.
