From the European Championships to the Paris Olympics, the 11 important sporting

The Olympic Games in Paris and the European Football Championship in Germany will be just some of the major sporting moments of 2024. For Germany, the most important is the EC in football.

1. European Men's Handball Championship

The tournament will take place from January 10 to 28 with 24 teams in Germany. The matches will be played in Mannheim, Berlin and Munich (preliminary round), Hamburg (main round) and Cologne (main and final round). In addition, two matches – including Germany's preliminary round match against Switzerland – will be played in front of 50,000 spectators at Düsseldorf's football stadium. The big favorite is Denmark, which has won the last three World Cup titles.

2. World Swimming Championships

From February 2 to 18, the World Swimming Championships medals will be awarded in Doha/Qatar. The German Swimming Federation will send just three women and seven men to Qatar, meaning there will be no relay team. Long-distance swimmer Florian Wellbrock has the best chance of winning a medal.

3. Super Bowl LVIII

On February 11, the whole world will be watching in Paradise, south of Las Vegas – at least the increasingly large part of the world that is enthusiastic about the NFL and American football. The 58th Super Bowl will take place in the stadium of the Las Vegas Raiders - while the final of the US professional league is considered as perhaps the greatest spectacle in the world. American superstar Usher will perform at halftime.

4. World Championship in bob and skeleton

Some of the passages on the 1,300-meter-long track in Winterberg are called roundabouts, omega loops and labyrinths. Here, athletes will take to the ice at the World Bobsleigh and Skeleton Championships between February 19 and March 3. The small town in the Sauerland, in the east of the state of NRW, hosts the World Cup for the fifth time after 1995, 2000, 2003 and 2015.

5. World Hockey Championship for Men

The world ice hockey championship this time will take place in the Czech Republic. Prague and Ostrava are the places. For the German team, which last year was world runner-up, the aim is to finally win. The odds hinge on whether NHL stars like Leon Draisaitl can play. The North American professional league begins the playoffs at the end of April.

6. European Athletics Championships

From 7 to 12 June there will be running, jumping and throwing at the Olympic Stadium in Rome, when Europe's best athletes will compete against each other. However, it is debatable whether all the stars will participate and perform at their best. That's because an even more important competition of the season is on the agenda later – the Paris Olympics a month and a half later.

7. European men's football championship

Will there be another "summer fairy tale" for Germany like in the 2006 World Cup? Or will disappointment prevail as Germany could be eliminated as hosts very early? German national soccer coach Julian Nagelsmann's team opens the tournament on June 14 in Munich and hopes to be there until the July 14 final in Berlin. Another 23 teams are playing for the European Cup – including reigning champions Italy, but also Albania, France, England, Spain and many other countries.

8. Tour de France

The most important cycling race in the world starts on June 29 in Florence and ends for the first time not in Paris, but in Nice because of preparations for the Olympic Games. The women will compete from August 12 to 18. Their tour ends in Alpe d'Huez.

9. Summer Olympics

The Olympic Games open on July 26. The races don't just take place in Paris and the surrounding area, because the sailing takes place outside Marseille while the surfing takes place near Tahiti. Football, basketball and handball games are also played in other French cities. Paris, which hosted the Olympics in 1900 and 1924, is hoping for a peaceful Games, but the conflict in the Middle East and the war in Ukraine could sour the mood and atmosphere.

10. Paralympic Summer Games

17 days after the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games, the competitions of the best athletes with physical disabilities begin. They will compete in Paris from August 28 to September 8 in 22 sports. This time there will be 220 more races than in the Olympic Games. The reason is the different damage classes. In the women's 100 meters alone, there will be a total of 13 Paralympic Games winners.

11. European Women's Handball Championship

At the end of the year, Europe's best handball players will aim for European Championship medals. The matches will be played in four venues in Switzerland, Austria and Hungary from November 28. The final location will be Vienna on December 15th. For the first time, 24 teams are participating. However, who will be there alongside the three host teams is yet to be determined. The qualification lasts until the beginning of April 2024./ DW
