The first quarterfinal matches of the Australian Open tennis grand slam were played in Melbourne today, also determining the first semifinalists.
Novak Djokovic, a 10-time winner of this tournament, qualified for the semifinals after a 3-1 victory over Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz (4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4). A victory with a reversal for the Serb, who played a good match despite his age.
German Alexander Zverev, world number 2, achieved a difficult victory. He defeated American Tommy Paul 3-1 (7-6, 7-62-6, 6-1), in a balanced and very competitive challenge, especially in the first two sets.
In the women's singles, Belarusian tennis player Arina Sabalenka, the world number 1, defeated Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 2-1 (6-2, 2-6, 6-3). A match with a lot of hope for Sabalenka, but in the end she managed to win and advance further.
She will face Spanish tennis player Paula Badosa, currently ranked 11th in the world, in the semifinals. In the other quarterfinal, she defeated American Coco Gauff 2-0 (7-5, 6-4), reaching the semifinals of a grand slam for the first time.
