The former Man Utd winger is quickly finding his rhythm at Chelsea after being released from the Old Trafford circus, where he failed to produce any results.
The 24-year-old is making his mark at Stamford Bridge after completing an initial loan move to the Blues on transfer deadline day.
Jadon Sancho's United career has effectively ended after he reacted angrily to an insinuation by Ten Hag that he had not trained well enough to warrant a place in their matchday squad in September 2023. An outburst on social media later and the winger was kicked out of the first team. And so Sancho moved into obscurity for several months. When the January window opened, he returned to Dortmund on loan, securing a second chance to rebuild his reputation in familiar surroundings, a place where he enjoyed the best of times. His numbers were not as good as his first spell - three goals and three assists in 21 appearances - although his performances and general demeanor had improved, playing a key role in BVB's run to the Champions League final .
Dortmund declined to pursue their interest in a permanent deal and Sancho returned to United in pre-season after appearing to have made peace with Ten Hag, only to be dropped from their Premier League first-team and put up for sale. A strange end to a strange period was in sight.
It was first suggested on 20 August that United felt Chelsea would be interested in signing Sancho, despite already adding to their ranks with Pedro Neto and Joao Felix. There wasn't much time to complete a deal but the Blues pushed through an initial loan move which was confirmed almost 24 hours after the window closed.
It reeked of Chelsea's infamous approach, although there was still method behind the madness. Sancho was more suited to Maresca's possession-based philosophy, which calls for his wing-backs to stay wide and stay on their flanks rather than running back, and a move home to London could benefit greatly from an off-field perspective.
Better still, Chelsea pulled the pants off United in the negotiations, agreeing a one-year loan plus an obligation to buy for £25m if they finished 14th or higher in the Premier League table.
Beating Tottenham left Chelsea four points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool, although the Reds now have a game in hand after Saturday's Merseyside derby was postponed. You can imagine the Blues won't finish the season early due to their defensive lapses and general immaturity throughout the squad at this stage of the draft, however they could be worthy contenders. Sancho now has more of a say in their success with two goals from his last two games and some statement performances already this season.
Sancho left United and joined Chelsea at the most opportune moment. He may never reach the heights once expected of him, but he could still prove to be a key player for a team competing for major honours. It was difficult to predict such a thing even a few months ago.
