The historic rivalry between Barcelona and Real Madrid has crossed the boundaries of the playing field and is moving into the legal arena. Tensions between the two clubs have escalated following Barcelona's decision to initiate legal proceedings against Real Madrid president Florentino Perez.
The Catalan club announced that it has filed a preliminary request for conciliation, a necessary step before filing a defamation lawsuit, demanding that Perez retract his statements regarding the “Negreira” case. According to Barcelona, these statements are “false, defamatory and offensive” to the image and reputation of the club.
The origin of the conflict is linked to statements made by Florentino Perez on May 12. The Real Madrid president said that during his tenure the club had won seven La Liga titles, but according to him the number could have been twice as high, as seven other titles were “stolen”. This statement was interpreted as an allusion that Barcelona’s successes had been influenced by alleged corruption in arbitration, within the framework of the “Negreira” affair.
Initially, Barcelona executives stated that they would analyze the content of these statements to assess the possibility of legal action. This week, the club confirmed that the legal team had prepared the necessary documentation for the relevant procedures.
If Florentino Perez does not retract his statements, Barcelona warns that it will take the next step, filing a criminal complaint for defamation. A retraction of the statements is considered unlikely, as the Real Madrid president has previously stated that he will pursue the “Negreira” case “to the end”.
In an official statement, Barcelona announced that it has filed a request for conciliation under article 205 of the Spanish Penal Code, with the aim of Florentino Perez retracting the statements that, according to the club, he made knowingly and untrue.
" The aim of this lawsuit is to force Mr. Perez to withdraw certain statements that he made knowing them to be false, statements that are defamatory and offensive to the image and reputation of the Club ," Barcelona said in a statement.
The Catalan club emphasizes that, if the reconciliation procedure does not bring results, it will proceed with the filing of the relevant criminal charges.
