Trump sharply criticized the Supreme Court justices who blocked the global tariffs he imposed, calling them a "disgrace to the nation" and later signing documents imposing a 10% tariff on all countries.
French President Emmanuel Macron reacted to the United States Supreme Court's decision that overturned tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, describing it as evidence of the functioning of control mechanisms in a democracy.
Speaking at an event at the annual agricultural fair in Paris, Macron stressed the importance of an independent judiciary and the rule of law. He stressed that a democratic system requires checks and balances on the executive branch.
"It's not bad to have a Supreme Court and the rule of law...It's good to have power and checks and balances to power in a democracy," Macron stressed.
Regarding the new 10 percent global tariff announced by Trump, Macron stated that French authorities will analyze the consequences that this measure could have on the country's economy. He added that France will continue to export its products.
On Friday, the US Supreme Court ruled 6-3 to uphold a lower court ruling that found the president had exceeded constitutional authority by using a 1977 law, intended for national emergencies, to justify sweeping tariffs.
The decision was written by Chief Justice John Roberts. Three liberal justices and three conservative justices voted together to strike down the measure, creating a joint majority against the tariffs.
The decision opens a new phase for American trade policy and its impact on international economic relations.
Trump attacks judges
US President Donald Trump has imposed a new 10% global tariff to replace those struck down by the Supreme Court, calling the ruling "terrible" and sharply criticizing the judges who rejected his trade policy.
The president unveiled the plan shortly after judges struck down most of the global tariffs the White House announced last year. In a 6-3 decision, the court ruled that the president had exceeded his authority.
The decision was a major victory for American businesses and states that had challenged the duties, opening the door to billions of dollars in tariff refunds, while also fueling new uncertainties in the global trade landscape.
"The Supreme Court Justices who voted against our tariffs should be ashamed of themselves. Their decision was ridiculous, but now that the adjustment process begins, we will do everything we can to get more money than before," Trump wrote in Truth.
The 10% global tariffs imposed by Donald Trump will take effect at midnight on February 24 and will remain in place for 150 days. The tariffs will not apply to a wide range of products, including essential minerals and goods already subject to special tariffs unaffected by the Supreme Court ruling.
Speaking from the White House on Friday, Trump implied that the refunds would not come without a legal battle, saying he expected the case to drag on in court for years.
He also said he would turn to other laws to move forward with his tariffs, which he said encourage investment and manufacturing in the US.
