Prime Minister Edi Rama is holding a meeting today with the mayors of the country's municipalities in Durrës, with a focus on local government administration and the challenges brought about by the increase in tourist flows in the main cities.
During the meeting, Rama focused particularly on the problems that have emerged in large and tourist cities, while he harshly criticized the Municipality of Vlora and Mayor Ermal Dredha, who was present in the hall.
The Prime Minister emphasized that one of the most problematic cases is Vlora, where, according to him, the mayor and local structures have their eyes half open and half closed, while adding that the city has become a focal point of discussions due to the boom in unauthorized construction ahead of the tourist season.
"I will make a general address of some key issues that unfortunately large cities with a special load of tourist flow in Albania have today.
The weakness of local government has also come to light as a result of a major change in the entire way the country functions, because the country no longer only supports its own residents, but also supports an extra load of tourists that brings new complicated challenges and large extra burdens for local government.
"One of the things that is noticeable is the internal incentive of business to cross borders in the form of land grabbing, to illegal construction in territories where attention is less, or like in Vlora where the mayor has his eyes half open and half closed," Rama said.
