Unusual flow in pediatrics, neighborhood emergencies

This period, loaded with viruses and respiratory infections, has greatly increased the work flow in the pediatric emergency. Over 300 small patients are referred to QSUT every day for problems caused by influenza and RSV.

Pediatricians have called it an artificial load, since more than half of the patients are not urgent cases for hospital treatment. In order to reduce the flow of hospital visits, the Ministry of Health has long since opened 4 pediatric emergencies near health centers in Tirana, as well as an emergency in Vorë and 1 in Kamëz.

Health leaders inform parents about these services and assure them that specialist doctors work in these emergencies as well as in QSUT. But unlike the QSUT emergency room, where there are no visits from parents alarmed about the condition of their sick children, the neighborhood emergency rooms are empty. Pediatricians near the health centers indicate that during 24 hours they do not treat more than 3 emergency cases.

The parents refuse to speak publicly about this situation. Off camera, many of them show that they are not informed about the functioning of pediatric emergencies near the neighborhoods, and many others do not hide their lack of trust in the doctors of the health centers in emergency situations. With the cooling of the weather, an increase in morbidity is expected in the population, especially in the pediatric age group, a situation that is expected to burden the health system as well.
