Alba Parietti Shocks: I Wish My Mother Would Die

It was a touching monologue, that of Alba Parietti in the Tuesday, May 18th episode of Le Iene. A personal, delicate monologue, on a topic that is still very often considered taboo, that of mental health problems.

"Many years ago I said to my father: I would rather my mother died. I really didn't want this, but it might make you understand how painful it is to be in a relationship with a woman who could be the mother of my dreams, a fairy tale, and then all of a sudden turn into a witch who scared me, who hurt me."

My mother was a mystery to me for almost my entire life, a mystery that I only solved a few years ago, when in a drawer I found hundreds of notebooks written in secret, in the last 7 years of her life. She talked about the war, about my father, but above all about her mental illness and about herself, she wrote: “This is the story of Graziella, a poor schizophrenic, and how I became friends with her.”

In these words I discovered a very humorous, refined, brilliant woman and I realized that her behaviors were certainly not the product of malice or sadism, but of an evil that she hid from everyone."

Alba Parietti also revealed that, for ten years, her mother had hidden from her the existence of a brother, her uncle Aldo, also with schizophrenia and confined to a rehabilitation clinic.

"These two great pains have taught me that behind mental problems are often hidden unique sensitivities. Smart and extraordinary minds, with an extraordinary strength which, however, does not have to become a sentence for loneliness. Unfortunately, today, the stigma of mental illness remains unchecked. In fact, it is an act of justice and civilization, supporting them, because very often we understand the value of a person only when it is too late," she added.
