A crack in the embankment of the Shkumbin River, near the village of Labinot Fushë in Elbasan, activated emergency structures on Thursday evening.
Local authorities immediately deployed vehicles and teams from the Public Services Agency, Civil Emergencies and the Drainage Board to stabilize the situation. The damage to the embankment endangers about 200 homes in the Labinot area as well as the pumping stations that supply the city with drinking water.
Crews are placing about 300 concrete blocks along the damaged section to reinforce the protective structure and prevent water from flowing out of the bed. According to field assessments, worsening weather conditions could increase river flows and make intervention more difficult, so the work is being carried out at an accelerated pace.
Responsible structures continue to monitor the area to prevent the spread of damage and to protect homes and water supply infrastructure.
