The Trump administration emphasizes that it will use "every available tool" to protect national security interests and ensure stability in the region...
President Donald Trump's administration has announced a "significant expansion" of its visa restriction policy in the Western Hemisphere, targeting individuals who, according to Washington, act on behalf of countries adversarial to the United States.
According to an official statement from the State Department, the expanded policy gives US authorities the ability to deny visas to individuals who intentionally engage in activities that “undermine American interests” in the region. The institution emphasizes that this measure is directly related to President Trump’s National Security Strategy, which aims to prevent adversaries from controlling strategic assets or threatening the security and prosperity of the US.
“ The State Department is working to advance American leadership in the hemisphere, protect our homeland, and ensure access to vital routes and areas ,” the statement said. In this context, the expansion of the existing policy targets individuals who act in the interests of adversarial actors and who affect regional security or democratic sovereignty.
An important element of this measure is the inclusion of family members of those affected. According to the State Department, individuals who fall under this policy, as well as their immediate family members, “will generally be inadmissible for entry into the United States.”
US authorities explain that the restrictions may apply to persons who, among other things, enable adversary powers to gain control over key assets and strategic resources in the region, destabilize regional security efforts, harm US economic interests, or conduct influence operations aimed at undermining the sovereignty of countries.
So far, according to the official announcement, visa restrictions have been imposed on 26 individuals under this policy. The Trump administration emphasizes that it will use “every available means” to protect national security interests and ensure stability in the region.
The development follows a series of similar measures taken in recent months, including visa restrictions for citizens from dozens of countries globally. The policies have been criticized by civil rights organizations, which argue that broad wording of prohibited activities could create uncertainty about selection criteria and procedural safeguards for affected individuals.
In an earlier reaction, representatives of the Democracy Forward organization expressed concern that such measures could lead to widespread exclusion based on national origin and limit the exchange of ideas and perspectives.
The announcement of the expansion of this policy has also been distributed by the United States Embassy in Tirana through its official channels. This action is interpreted as a signal that the US authorities intend to inform the public and institutions in the region about the implementation of the measure, implying that it may also affect individuals operating or having connections in countries outside the Western Hemisphere, including persons in Albania if they engage in activities described in the policy. / Pamphlet
