New details have emerged about the serious incident in which 51-year-old captain Arben Anamali lost his life while rescuing two Israeli tourists in Lake Shkodra.
According to sources from the scene and evidence collected by the Shkodra Police, on the day of the accident, Anamali was carrying out a regular tourist transport with the municipality's boat, which was carrying seven tourists from Israel. During the voyage, some of them jumped into the water without warning and in direct violation of the captain's order not to do so, due to strong currents in the area.
Alarmed by the danger, the captain immediately threw life jackets, including his own, towards them, and then went into the water himself to help them. He managed to bring them close to the boat and save their lives, but after that he was never seen again on the surface.
It is suspected that the captain suffered a cardiac arrest due to extreme fatigue and physical stress. His body was found after 48 hours of searching by search and rescue forces and is currently in the morgue of the Shkodra regional hospital, where forensic expertise is awaited.
The Israeli tourists, after giving their statements to the police, left Shkodra towards Tirana. They confirmed that they entered the water without permission, ignoring the captain's warning calls.
Arben Anamali, who was a father of two, worked every day on the boat placed in service of tourism by the municipality. The event has shocked the local community, while tributes are expected for his sacrifice.
