A powerful fire engulfed the "Villa Gjecaj" restaurant in the tourist village of Theth, in the Greater Highlands, last night. The building is owned by the spouses Petrit and Aida Gjecaj, who are well-known names to the public: Petrit is an officer with the National Bureau of Investigation (BKH), while Aida Gjecaj was previously invited to an episode of Prime Minister Edi Rama's podcast.
Preliminary suspicions point to a deliberate fire and not an incident caused by an electrical fault. This is also reinforced by the initial assessment of experts, who have ruled out the possibility that the fire broke out due to an electrical spark, explaining that the electricity was active even when the building was engulfed in flames.
The incident comes at a tense time in the Theth area, where the National Inspectorate for Territorial Protection (IKMT) is undertaking an action to demolish illegal constructions. This has raised suspicions that it could be an act of revenge related to this situation.
Aida Gjecaj, in a statement to the media, emphasized that she has had no personal conflicts and has never received threats. According to her, she has tried to stay within the legal framework, investing only in a guesthouse with five rooms and a small restaurant, without building any buildings without a building permit.
"I have no problems with anyone, I have no debts, I have not received any threats. I have only built what I was allowed to and I have done everything with passion for the tourism of the area. This coincides with a sensitive period for Theth, but I have no issues with IKMT because my facility is legal," she declared.
She added that the damage caused by the fire is extensive and is estimated at around 150,000 euros. According to her, "it is a bad coincidence" that this incident occurred at the same time as the demolition activities in the area, leaving open the possibility that the fire was set by someone else affected by these interventions.
Currently, authorities have not yet issued an official statement on the causes of the fire, while investigations are expected to reveal whether it was a deliberate arson or an accidental disaster.
