Journalist Artan Hoxha has spoken about the situation in prisons, stating that drug lords continue to exercise influence and control even behind bars.
Invited to "A2 CNN", Hoxha said that the problem is not only related to prison infrastructure, but to the lack of effective control and staffing levels within penitentiary institutions.
"If you have drug lords there who have moved tons of cocaine and who have considerable amounts of money, with guards who are paid ridiculous salaries, the security of the prison is not maintained by the thickness of the walls, but by the level of staff you have inside," he declared.
The journalist also recounted an episode that, according to him, proves the power that some convicts have inside prisons, claiming that the use of cell phones or video communications are not rare cases.
"To bring a cell phone inside, there is a fixed fee of 2 thousand euros per month, because there are wave-blocking devices in prisons, but the opposite happens ," said Hoxha.
The journalist added that some convicts manage to communicate openly even during television broadcasts.
"He even gets you out of prison, takes you there with a camera, makes it clear, while you're on a live show," said Hoxha.
According to Hoxha, another hierarchy exists within prisons, where authorities are often forced to find forms of coexistence with influential people to avoid tensions and conflicts.
"Inside prisons there is another world, another level of hierarchy. Often the authorities are forced to make some kind of pact or agreement with them, to offer them some facilities so that they can maintain some order inside," he declared.
Hoxha warned of the difficulties that arise if authorities directly confront criminal groups within penitentiary institutions.
"If you enter into a conflict in a prison with 800 convicts, you've created trouble for yourself," the journalist said.
