The Chairman of the Central Election Commission, Ilirjan Celibashi, says that the voting of Albanians who live outside the borders is currently impossible. He said that this was also confirmed by the decision of the Constitutional Court, and that the provisions of the Electoral Code are not sufficient to implement it.
He also said that the political parties and the Parliament of Albania should work harder to make it possible for immigrants to vote.
"Perhaps it is good to say that we do not allow voting from abroad, but we do not apply it. I will not say anything more, with this issue we have addressed the changes to the electoral law in 2020. At least we tried to do this in a serious way.
We engaged some provisions of the electoral code regarding this issue, but already confirmed by the last decision of the Constitutional Court, we realized that those provisions of the electoral code are not sufficient to really enable voting from abroad.
We will still have to work, first of all, with the political parties and the Assembly of Albania, to make it possible in the next elections", said Celibashi in an interview for Euronews Albania.
