Activist Luçina Kokaj, during her speech at the 34th protest against Prime Minister Edi Rama, said that representatives of the European Parliament and European political groups support citizens in their movement. She said that recent reactions have condemned the violence used against protesters and have demanded respect for democratic freedoms.
Kokaj initially focused on the statement of the Vice President of the European Parliament, Nicolae Ștefănuță, whom he said condemned the police intervention against protesters during the protest the previous day.
According to her, support has also come from the Green group in the European Parliament, while she noted that the European People's Party (EPP), part of the European political right, has also expressed its support for the protesters through a resolution.
Referring to the content of this document, Kokaj said that the EPP expresses concern about the situation of the rule of law in Albania and stands in solidarity with citizens who are peacefully protesting, describing the right to assembly as one of the fundamental freedoms that must be guaranteed.
She added that the resolution recognizes the protesters' demands as legitimate and calls for the investigation of high-level corruption cases, punishment of electoral crime, as well as protection of the environment, cultural heritage and property rights.
Following her speech, Kokaj said that the document condemns any attempt to exert pressure or silence protesters, journalists, activists and civil society organizations, emphasizing the importance of guaranteeing democratic freedoms.
Kokaj stated that the resolution calls on European Union institutions to continue monitoring developments in Albania and to keep the country's membership process closely linked to respect for the rule of law and democratic standards.
