In an interview with "Top Story", the ambassador said he was touched by the implication that he was doing things as EU ambassador to Albania, because of his personal history.
“Listen, I know there’s been a lot of talk about this. I think it’s time to turn the page, to be honest. But let me just say one thing. On a personal level, the statements that were made in that case, but also in other cases regarding my private life, I would simply define as unpleasant, to be honest. And they don’t affect me that much. You know, I’m an adult, as you said, an older man. I know my choices, I’ve made them and I’m sticking to them. I don’t have to justify anything. What bothered me in that case was the implication that because of these personal choices, these personal choices were clouding my judgment and that I was doing things as an EU ambassador because of my personal history.
"This is something I couldn't accept, because I believe I'm doing my job professionally, with integrity. And so I was really happy that my boss, Commissioner Kos, stepped in and said she had full confidence in me and that's all I needed. I don't need anything else. I don't need any commission to say whether this was right or wrong ," Gonzato said.
