KLSH scans the Institute of Geosciences: Seismic station with problems,

The 2019 earthquake highlighted the need to monitor seismic activity in the country like never before. Based on what happened both in terms of lost lives and material damages, the State Supreme Audit Office conducted an audit of the activity of the Institute of Geosciences in the last three years.

KLSH found that in the institution also responsible for monitoring earthquakes, a seismic station had problems, while the building in which the equipment is located is not in good condition.

Also according to KLSH, "Geoshkencat" does not have a laboratory for performing various analyzes and the institution has not inventoried its own material base.

"It is true that one of the findings is exactly what you just quoted and it specifically refers to the Shkodër seismological station. It is a finding which is not generalizable. In my personal, but also institutional opinion. Because the seismological rise does not consist only of that of Shkodër. Of course, this is a persistent problem", said Edmond Dushi.

After reviewing the documentation, KLSH has also found that the Institute of Geosciences in 2020 realized only 4.1 percent of the planned investments. The level of investments turns out to have increased to 8.8 percent in 2021 and 41 percent during 2022.

"In its entire life, the seismological network, from 1974 until today, has had the Durrës earthquake (2019) as its strongest earthquake. And it showed that that legacy infrastructure was not up to par. Therefore, our investments are mainly focused on technology", Dushi added.

The need to increase available funds is also accepted by the Deputy Director of the Institute of Geosciences, Edmond Dushi, who warns of seismic activity in the future.

"The northern part of the Adriatic is active and has above average earthquakes. We have to be on the alert to have an activity maybe in the future", said Dushi.

In order to monitor in real time the seismic activity in the country, the Institute of Geosciences has conceived an application which will soon be made available to citizens in the country. /A2 CNN
