The renowned lawyer says that an immediate resignation of the prime minister could catch the civic movement unprepared and bring back the traditional confrontation between the Socialist Party and the Democratic Party.
Lawyer Kreshnik Spahiu has reacted to the ongoing civic protests in the country, warning that an immediate resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama will not necessarily mean political change, if the current movement fails to organize itself politically.
According to Spahiu, the Constitution provides that in the event of the resignation of the prime minister, the country can go to elections within a very short period of time.
" If Edi Rama resigns today, according to the Constitution, Article 65/3, elections must be called within 45 days, that is, on July 20. According to the law, existing parties register in the elections. A new party requires at least 3 months to register. Don't be surprised if Rama plays the bluff, finding all parties unprepared. At the ballot boxes you will again have only two options: PD and PS ," Spahiu writes.
He argues that the energy of the protest risks being dissipated if it does not turn into an organized political alternative that challenges the country's two main forces.
" If this wave of protests does not turn into a giant mega-party against the DP and the SP, but fades away like the chemical weapons issue or remains only for the pelican, then it will take you another 20 years, but this moment will not come ," the lawyer says.
At the end of his reaction, Spahiu also addressed the organizers and speakers of the protest, advising them to be careful of the scenario of early elections.
" A very valuable piece of advice for some of my friends, whose speeches I was listening to in the square: beware of early elections, because they can further strengthen those we want to see in prison ," Spahiu declares.
His reaction comes at a time when the protests have entered their first week and are increasingly articulating political demands against the government, but also against the traditional political establishment, with calls that often target both Edi Rama and Sali Berisha.
