After one of the hottest days in the last two or three decades, Albania is under the influence of a strong heat wave, which has covered almost the entire territory, including mountainous areas, an unusual phenomenon for our climate.
Meteorologist Lajda Porja said on the "Aldo Morning Show" that yesterday the temperature record of 44 degrees Celsius set in the Berat region in 1993 was approached, and according to some estimates may have been broken.
She emphasized that unlike usual, the peak of the heat was recorded at 3:00 PM, with temperatures in some areas reaching over 42 degrees today, although with a slight and almost imperceptible drop compared to yesterday.
But, the news that brings relief to citizens is the arrival of a cold air mass from Northern Europe, which is expected to hit the Balkans starting on Sunday, July 27. This clash between two opposing air masses will bring an immediate drop in temperatures, with maximums dropping to around 34–35 degrees Celsius.
"Yesterday was one of the hottest days in the last two or three decades. Not because we had very high values, but the entire territory, including the mountainous areas, had quite extreme temperatures. Yesterday, it was even discussed that the record of 43.6, or 44 degrees in 1993 in the Berat region, was broken. Yesterday, unlike usual, the maximum values were recorded at 3:00 p.m. It must be said that the temperatures are very high, during today there is a downward trend, but very slightly. Even today we could be at these values, we will reach a maximum of over 42 degrees in some areas," said Porja.
Sunday will mark not only a cooling of the air, but also an increase in winds and brief rain showers, mainly in the north and center of the country. The south, meanwhile, will lack precipitation, experiencing a calmer transition of this temporary situation.
According to Porja, this is a natural climatic intervention, but still rare for the intensity and contrast it brings in such a short space of time.
"Meanwhile, we expect a total change on Sunday. A cold front is coming from Northern Europe towards the Balkans. And this will immediately push this hot front that has invaded the Balkans. We expect Sunday to mark 34 degrees Celsius, in some areas 35. We expect temperatures to normalize directly. On Sunday, we will also have an increase in wind intensity because it is that war between two air masses that are acting with each other. We have showers that will be mainly in the northern areas of the country. They will also slightly affect some areas of the center, the Elbasan region and some areas of Tirana, while the south will be completely without precipitation. It is a temporary situation," the meteorology department said.
