From Pristina to Belgrade, the Belgian chief diplomat toured the Balkans; why

Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot has begun a 6-day visit to the Western Balkans region.

The Belgian chief diplomat has announced that during these days he will visit Kosovo, Montenegro, Serbia, North Macedonia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, while Albania, he announced, will be visited at another stage, when he will have the "pleasure of opening the Belgian embassy" in Tirana.

"Engagement with the Western Balkans is strategic for the security and stability of our continent. The Western Balkans are not on Europe's doorstep, they are in Europe. Their security is our security, their stability is our stability," he wrote on social media.

Post:

Starting today, a 6-day working visit to the Western Balkans.

I will visit Montenegro, Serbia, North Macedonia, Kosovo, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. I will visit Albania at a later stage, during a special mission, when I will have the pleasure of opening our Embassy in Tirana.

Engagement with the Western Balkans is strategic for the security and stability of our continent. The Western Balkans are not on Europe's doorstep — they are in Europe. Their security is our security, their stability is our stability. Some of these countries have waited for more than twenty years to join the EU. It is therefore important to maintain a credible integration perspective, but the process remains merit-based: we expect them to have the courage to implement the necessary reforms, regarding the rule of law, the judiciary, the fight against corruption and regional reconciliation.

Belgium is and will remain an engaged partner in the region, both politically and economically. I am here to deepen our partnerships.
