The protest of residents of Rrjoll in Velipojë against the construction of a luxury resort by the company "Gener 2", owned by businessman Bashkim Ulaj, continued today, accompanied by police intervention and the escorting of six protesters.
According to residents, the company's employees attempted to start construction in the area, but were stopped by the local community, which opposes the project, claiming that the land where the construction is planned is their property or has been used by them for years. After the verbal clash, the police intervened and escorted six people, including a girl, to the police station.
She is Luçiana Kokaj, who in every protest has raised her voice for the rights of the residents of the area.
The protesters say they are seeking "justice" and the intervention of state institutions to verify the legality of the project and the status of land ownership. They say they were not consulted and did not receive full information on the procedures followed for the construction of the resort.
Political calls were also articulated during the protest. Some residents demanded a reaction from former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, raising public questions about the support they said was sought in the elections.
Residents are demanding that businessman Bashkim Ulaj not build on their land without a compensation agreement, warning that the theft of heritage lands could lead to escalation and tension in the situation. They added that they will protect the land by all means.
Earlier, the environmental organization PPNEA stated that the project risks concreting a protected area, which is home to hundreds of migratory birds, intact coastal dunes, lagoons, rare habitats, and ecological corridors.
Oligarch Bashkim Ulaj has received strategic investor status from the Government to build "Blue Borgon", a tourist resort with 33 accommodation structures with 3 to 10 floors above ground and 1 floor underground.
Police have meanwhile confirmed the arrest of six people following tensions in the area, acting as protection for the construction oligarch who is grabbing land from residents.
Local and central institutions have not come up with a detailed position on the situation, while it remains unclear whether public hearings or consultations with the community were held before the start of the works.
