After pressure from NATO and international partners, the Albanian Government is initiating procedures to reactivate the radar that was deliberately put out of operation in December 2013, while traffic will have the road open for another 9 months until the completion of the works...

According to the announcement by the Director of the Centralized Purchasing Operator, Arlinda Pogaj, the tender worth 250 million lekë is for the purpose of: "Purchase of equipment and parts for the technical readiness of the Radar at the Radio Broadcasting Point in Llogara".

The radar in Llogara was deliberately taken out of service in early December 2013 by order of the government, to exclude traffic in the southwestern maritime area from tracking.

Following the reaction of NATO, EUROPOL and US-EU partner agencies, the Albanian Government was forced to reactivate not only the radar in Llogara, but also the radars on the island of Sazan, Ksamil, Seman, Divjaka, Cape Rodonit, Durrës and Shëngjin, all of which had been turned off and out of service.

On February 14, 2014, NATO specialists, an American company, and specialists from the Ministry of Defense put the radars into operation at 9 radio transmitter points along the coast.

But as is known and confirmed by international reports, until May 2015, the radars were turned off for criminal groups linked to government leaders to carry out trafficking activities.

In March 2016, segments within the Ministry of Defense, undoubtedly with the knowledge and silence of their superiors, disabled the radar in Llogara, while in September 2017 they disabled the radar on Sazan Island.

At that time, international partners were deceived with false reports that the radars were working and did not detect any trafficking activities, while they were then deceived that the electrical cable lines supplying the radar points had allegedly been stolen and were promised that they would be put back into operation very soon.

The 7-point maritime radars were put into operation within 2019, while for the radar on Sazan Island, work began in September 2025, because the son-in-law of US President Donald Trump will build a resort there.

But this time too, the Sazan radar has been left in the administration of a private company, which had the radars during the time when Mimi Kodheli was Minister of Defense and the radars were often turned off and put out of operation.

The radar in Llogara has been left turned off and out of operation for 10 consecutive years, and now, after pressure from NATO and US-EU partners, it will be put into operation with a 250 million lek tender; a fact that shows that the obstacle was not the value of the lek, but the intention to allow traffic.

The tender will take place on May 11, 2026, while the works will last 9 months, which means that for so many months the radar in Llogara will be out of operation, while traffic will have the road open in the southwestern maritime area./ Pamphlet
